Creating A Beautiful Home and Garden

When I purchased a home a few years ago, I had no idea what kind of workload I would be faced with. In addition to trying to figure out how to keep the place clean, I was also left with the challenge of tidying up the yard and keeping things trimmed. It was a little overwhelming, but I knew that I could do it with a little hard work and dedication. I started reading a lot of books and blogs about creating gorgeous things for your home and yard, and it was a great creative outlet. This blog is all about exciting, fun ways to make your home and yard even more beautiful.

3 Tips To Maintain The Appearance Of Your Hardwood Floor

by Alyssa Perkins

Installing a hardwood floor is a great way to increase the value of your home while adding an upscale look. But if you want your hardwood floor to continue looking great for years to come, you'll have to take proper care of it. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to hardwood maintenance.

1. Don't Let the Dust Get Comfortable

Dust is eventually going to end up on your floor no matter how clean your house is. Getting a little bit of dust on the hardwood is not a big deal but leaving that dust there long enough for it to settle in is a very big problem. When you leave dust unattended, it will have an opportunity to start breaking through your beautiful floor's finish. This is why it's critical that you vacuum or wipe down your hardwood floor at least once a week. Keep the hardwood dust-free as much as possible and you will significantly lengthen its life.

2. Watch Out for Water

Water and wood do not mix. If you have a hardwood floor in a room with a lot of windows, make sure that water is not leaking in during rainstorms. Also use caution when watering plants or doing any other activity where a drop or two of water might accidentally spill onto the floor. Leaving even a few drops of water on your hardwood floor can lead to damage over time. Inspect your floor near the windows after every rainstorm in order to prevent water stains and the beginning of wood rot.

3. Clean Up Messes Fast

It's obviously easier to clean up a spill on hardwood than it is on carpeting because the liquid won't be able to seep deep into the fabric. That doesn't mean however that you should get lazy about cleaning up a mess when it happens. Leaving any kind of dirt or liquid on your wood floor will harm its finish and it won't take too long for damage to begin to seep in. Use the same haste you would if you were trying to clean up a spill in one of your carpeted rooms and you'll be fine.

If you want to maintain the look of your hardwood floor, make sure you vacuum it every week and keep a close eye out for water and other spills. If you notice your floor is showing signs of wear and tear, contact a local contractor who specializes in hardwood floor refinishing.
